3.3.5 Time Jacking
Time Jacking
Mechanism: Time Jacking is a form of attack that involves manipulating the system time on a node to confuse the network about the timestamp of transactions or blocks. The attacker can change the time on their mining node to create a fork or introduce incorrect transaction data into the blockchain.
Impact: By altering the timestamp, the attacker may disrupt the blockchainβs consensus mechanism, potentially causing invalid block submissions, invalid transactions, or confusion among network participants about the correct blockchain state.
Prevention: Blockchain systems usually rely on timestamp validation and strict time synchronization protocols across nodes. Mechanisms like NTP (Network Time Protocol) help synchronize the time, reducing the risk of Time Jacking.
